Introduction Seminar: Forecasting of Severe Convective Storms

Dr. Charles A. Doswell

23 September 2017
Hotel Park Plaza Histria (ECSS venue)
Pula, Croatia

Who else could deliver this introduction seminar better than one of the most influential severe storms meteorologists of today?

Do not miss this chance to learn from the master about the concept and application of ingredients in severe storms forecasting.

During the one-day introduction you will work on the following topics:

Morning lecture

  • A review of physical ingredients and the concept of buoyancy.
  • Meteorological diagnoses of a given weather situation using different data sources.
  • The important role of the perturbation pressure for the convective updraft and sources for convective scale lift.

Content subject to minor change on the discretion of the lecturer.

Afternoon excercise

In the afternoon an interesting European severe weather case will be used to apply the new knowledge in practice. During this exercise you will be supported by the experienced ESTOFEX forecaster Tomas Pucik.

Lecture and exercise times
Sat 09:00 – 18:00, including a one-hour lunch break

The application of meteorological diagnosis to the problem of forecasting severe deep convection is demonstrated, emphasizing ingredients-based forecasting methods.

At the end of the seminar you will receive a participation certificate, which – in the light of the decisions of the 17th session of the WMO congress (regarding required public weather service competences for warning meteorologists) – might become very valuable in the near future.
