ESSL Testbed
The ESSL Testbed is a project to study severe weather across Europe through experimental forecast operations.
The Testbed tests new products to support the forecasting process, while providing training and interaction between forecasters and developers.
To participants, both forecasters and developers, the Testbed offers:
· One week of intense severe weather forecasting training, primarily using real-time weather as it occurs across the European continent.
· Real-time testing of new forecasting and nowcasting tools that are based on model, satellite, radar or observational data.
· A platform for interaction between the two groups essential to the warning process: forecasters and developers.
Training
Trainings are performed by ESSL staff and external experts. As a basic resource for the hands-on forecast training, standard meteorological data will be available, complemented with the experimental Testbed products. The basic data includes ECMWF, GFS and local model data, as well as EUMETSAT and radar data.
The philosophy is a physics-based approach like the “ingredients-based method” originally proposed by Doswell et al.. Expert lectures will deal with forecasting techniques and the experimental tools.
Testing
The testing of products takes place in three steps. Firstly, experimental forecasts are prepared by participant groups. Secondly, these forecasts are verified against the observed severe weather. Finally, the role of the experimental products in the forecasting process is evaluated. The evaluation takes place in group discussions and is recorded through questionnaires. The collected feedback is condensed in a report provided to the product developers.

You and the Testbed
On our way to organizing the Testbed we need you to express your interest in participating, either as a forecaster or as a developer of a product to be tested.
ESSL is investigating the possibiity of organizing the Testbed in June 2012. The ESSL Testbed can already count on support from EUMETSAT, EUMETCAL and several National Hydro-Meteorological Services and commercial project partners. It is however essential that those interested in participation pre-register as soon as possible.
