The ECSS 2007 Awards

In the frame of the 4th European Conference on Severe Storms the following awards are going to be given:

EMS - YSTA -- European Meteorological Society - Young Scientist Travel Awards --

UMFVG - M&P CSS -- Unione Meteorologica del Friuli Venezia Giulia - Movies and Picture of Convective Severe Storms Award --

ESSL -- European Severe Storms Laboratory Heino Tooming Award --


EMS - YSTA European Meteorological Society - Young Scientist Travel Awards

The EMS is supporting young European scientists by a number of Young Scientist Travel Awards (YSTA) per year.
As in the years before, for 2007, the EMS Council and the EMS Awards Committee have decided that a number of YSTAs will be presented at several conferences.
In particular, the Committee decided to present two Young Scientist Travel Awards, 300 Euro each, to the European Conference on Severe Weather.
Every young scientist may apply her/himself, or the proposals could come from the scientific conference committee.

Young scientists from countries which are EMS Members are entitled to receive an Award.

Recipients shall be under 32 years of age on the first of January of the calender year in which the award will be presented.

In order to qualify for a Travel Award the following documentation is requested:
(i) a short curriculum vitae,
(ii) a document to determine the age of the candidate,
(iii) a supporting statement (e.g. by an EMS Member Society or an EMS Associate Member)
(iv) a copy of the letter of acceptance for an oral or a poster presentation at that conference is required.

UMFVG - M&P CSS Unione Meteorologica del Friuli Venezia Giulia - Movies and Picture of Convective Severe Storms Award

The UMFVG Council with the aim of supporting the ECSS 2007 and in particular to stimulate the participants to contribute into the
Section: 11 - (Theodor T. Fujita session) - Movies and pictures of convective severe weather phenomena -
have decided to issue two awards on the theme "Movies and Picture of Convective Severe Storms"

Every person, without any distinction of age or nationality, who realized a picture and/or a movie related to severe storms and/or their aspects,
that will be presented at the European Conference on Severe Storms (ECSS 2007) in the session - Movies and pictures of convective severe weather phenomena -
Section: 11 - (Theodor T. Fujita session) can apply for the award.

The M&P CSS Awards will be presented during ECSS 2007 by the UMFVG President. The recipients will receive a certificate,
a cheque of 100.00 (one hundred) Euro and a letter of congratulations.

In order to apply for the award, candidates should send their movie and/or picture with the precise date, time and place where
the event caught by the movie and/or picture took place. A description of the technical characteristics of the device used to realize
the movie and or picture, even if not necessary, is welcome. Any other information useful for the characterization and interpretation of
the event (distance form the observer, point of view, etc) is welcome as well.

The application and the movie and/or picture should be submitted by 31st July 2007 to the Unione Meteorologica del Friuli Venezia Giulia -ONLUS-
in electronic form (presidente@umfvg.org) or in hardware form to the following ordinary mail address:

Movies and pictures will remain property of the Authors and UMFVG might use them only after a specific authorization.
Hardware material is not going to be returned to the applicants.

ESSL -- European Severe Storms Laboratory Heino Tooming Award

The European Severe Storms Laboratory with the aim of supporting the ECSS 2007 and in particular to stimulate the participants to contribute into the
Section: 07 - (Heino Tooming session) Climatology and databases of severe storms and related weather phenomena - has decided to issue one awards on the memory of Prof. Heino Tooming.

Professor Tooming (22.10.1930-18.09.2004) was an Estonian scientist who contributed in enriching the ECSS community with his long experience in the climatology of the severe storms in the Northern Europe with special reference to Estonia, his country. Heino has stimulated and encouraged a lot the ECSS community and his pleasant character was appreciated by both aged and young researchers and forecasters. In fact most of us remember the scientifically interesting and the nice informal discussions with him during the earlier ECSS editions.
