In Italy, the largest hailstone fell in\nCarmignano di Brenta. The specialists of the <strong>European Severe Weather\nDatabase (ESWD) <\/strong>estimate the size of this hailstone to be <strong>16 cm<\/strong> in\ndiameter, based on photos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccording to our information, this would be the largest\nrecorded hailstone in Europe\u201d, says Thilo K\u00fchne, Quality Control Manager of the\nEuropean Severe Weather Database. \u201cThe previous record was a 15 cm hailstone from\n20 June 2016 in S\u00e2nandrei, Romania\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides enormous economic damage, the hail caused 109\ninjuries on that day alone, according to the European Severe Weather Database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_-1024x819.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_-1024x819.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_-768x614.png 768w, https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_-375x300.png 375w, https:\/\/www.essl.org\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_hail_20230719_c_ESSL.org_.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Hail reports 20 July 2023<br> \u00a9 ESSL \/ ESWD <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ESSL obtaining its data from a large European network of\nweather entusthiasts and cooperating weather services. The Italian cases,\nincluding the new record braking hailstone, were reported by <strong>PreTemp<\/strong>,\nwhich collaborates closely with ESSL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts of ESSL and the European Severe Weather Database\nurge all people sending photos to the weather services or our data base, or posting\nhail pictures on social media, to use a ruler, coin or other reference objects\nnext to the hailstones when making a picture.
