Each year straight-line winds induced by severe convection cause substantial damage in Europe and lead to injuries and fatalities. This seminar will not only give insight to climatology and risk for such events, but will also discuss the meteorological development and forecasting perspective. Even more challenging in terms of low probability but extreme impact are strong tornadoes. Climatology, risk, physical understanding and forecasting of tornadoes will be taught and compared with straight-line convective windstorm events.

Topics

  • Methods of forecasting severe convective storms that produce convective windstorms and/or tornadoes
  • Climatology of convective windstorms (downbursts and gust fronts) and tornadoes
  • Climate change and severe storms (with focus on convective windstorms and tornadoes)

Lectures will be complemented by practicals and by daily weather briefings. Lecture and exercise times, including a lunch break:
