Grand Opening of ESSL Research and Training Centre 21 June 2012

The ESSL Research and Training Centre, the venue of the ESSL Testbed, was officially opened on 21 June 2012. After a normal ‘Testbed-day’, the press interviewed not only our ESSL Director Pieter, but also the Testbed participants. The celebration started afterwards with speeches from ESSL partners and guests (see the news article for further details). Finally, Pieter, our ESSL Director, officially declared the Research and Training Centre to be open and started the social part of the evening with sponsored hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

Week 3, day 1

The third week has started. ESSL staff has developed a routine in handling the equipment. Nevertheless, the level of excitement and enthusiasm with which the ESSL staff holds the Testbed is still as high as during the first days.

Testbed update: week 1, day 3

The first three days of the Testbed are over. ESSL staff concludes a successful start of the workshop. Minor technical difficulties occurred during the first days. Those are now solved.

Everyone is highly motivated. Good example: Pieter and Oscar continue debating about the formation of hail and the availability of super-cooled water during the lunch break. They use a skew-T sketch ‘drawn’ with toothpicks, which clearly shows their dedication.

ESSL Testbed has begun

Weeks of hard work of preparations are over. The level of anticipation increased exponentially among the ESSL staff during the last days. The first ESSL Testbed workshop has started today.

Thirteen participants, forecasters and developers of forecasting tools, improve and test forecasting processes of severe convective weather this week in our new ESSL Research and Training Centre in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. They are partly joined by further thirteen online participants, who will arrive next week in the Research and Training Centre. The Testbed workshop will be repeated five weeks in a row and is completely booked out.
